One of the addons for FireFox that I depend on every day is the Web Developer Firefox Addon. It allows me to view CSS, image information, highlight renegade objects (usually tables) among lots of other useful functions.

Over the past few weeks my toolbar had disappeared. I could still get to the developer tools from the Tools menu but the “one-click” love of the toolbar was gone.

I tried Googling and found nothing so I did what any experienced developer does…guess.  I went to the Firefox toolbar customize tab and reset the customizations to the default settings and, voila! my toolbar appeared again.

Turns out it was there all along it just was not displaying icons or text…doh!

Anyway, if anyone experiences the same thing I did and tries to Google “firefox web developer toolbar missing” maybe you’ll hit this page and find the answer.

thank you for your comment, I had the same prob after upgrading firefox.
one can’t do without the web developer addon isn’t it.

luckily I found out that web developer still was available under tools, but the toolbar is really a must. :)

I’m also glad that I got the toolbar back. It was killing me for several weeks until I finally figured it out.

Sadly, I had already tried that and it still didn’t come back. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the add-on, nothing. I’m just about to zap Firefox completely and try a reinstall of that and see what happens. It’s driving me nuts. I’m not even getting the options in the Tools menu.

    Rick-
Thanks for posting about this. My web developer toolbar disappeared a couple days ago (like it has mysteriously in the past) and I had forgotten how I got it back.

I’ve spent the last two days annoyed it was available only through the Tool menu.

You reference going to the Firefox toolbar customize tab…which was a little confusing. So, just to wrap a little more ‘meat’ around that: Right click in your toolbar area. The menu that comes up has “Customize…”. Choose that and then the “Restore Default Set” button.

Thanks for posting about this and helping me get back on my way!

Cool. Thanks for shedding a little more detail on how to get the toolbar back.

if you use Skype and Firefox has an Skype Extension in Add-on list. Remove or disable Skype Extension. Web Developer toolbar works fine for me now.

@poor Wierdo: Thanks for the Skype comment. That was my problem.
I tried resetting as recommended above, but the Firefox Web Developer toolbar didn’t show back up. Uninstalling the Skype plugin brought it back. (Note that I couldn’t see the Web Developer toolbar in the Tools menu either though… so I had _no_ access to it.)

HA! Thanks so much! But you know what Google search term I used to find your post? “What Happened to My Web Developer Toolbar?”

It was the first thing I said after I noticed it was gone!

I tried removing Skpye, and then re-installed WDT.

Not complaining – but the only way that I have managed to get FF not to take 30 minutes to load (seriously)

I have spent a few weeks trying to fix this to no avail.

    any other suggestions are welcome.

I found out that the add-on: “Ubuntu Firefox Modifications (v. 0.6)” (of course in Ubuntu) was causing the problem. Disabling it fixed the problem.
    I have WDT (1.1.6) and Firefox 3.0.9.

I experienced the same. Disabling the Skype extension worked for me. Thanks for this post! :)

Thanks for the post! NASCAR Geek’s bit about the “Restore Default Set” button did the trick for me.

I am about to shed some tears :(

I really love the developer toolbar and I have tried everyones advice…uninstalling and re-installing the developer toolbar, uninstalling other add-ons. I even re-installed firefox and that didn’t help!!

    Any other advice?

  13. Stephen 26. Jun, 2009 at 1:37 am #

Okay – I did the following things and it seemed to work…wooohooo!!

    Uninstalled Skype completelty
    Uninstalled all other add-ons
    Restarted my machine

When I re-installed the web developer toolbar it was working again….weird??

Thanks to your post, I was able to recover my Web Developer toolbar (couldn’t live without it). I had tried to uninstall and reinstall it, to no avail.

  15. Scott 02. May, 2010 at 3:15 am #

I disabled all of my add-ons, and then started with Web Developer using the advice in this post, which worked perfectly.

Then I enabled each add-on one at a time.

When I enabled DrupalForFirebug 0.0.6, Web Developer again produced an empty toolbar.

Turns out DFF 0.0.7 is available (FireFox 3.5.9 in Ubuntu Karmic did not automatically update it).

I manually installed the DFF update, enabled it, and Web Developer works fine.

[...] I didn’t really know how it was lost. All I can remember is I run the Firefox updates and when I try to get back to browser, the Web Developer Toolbar is missing. Even in the Tools menu, it is missing. After trying to disable-enable it and uninstall-install it, I tried searching Google and finally got this blog. [...]
